History and Vision

Founded in 2018, RifRaf Games is an independent production studio based in Brooklyn, NY.

RifRaf Games began essentially as a feasibility study. We started with a lot of passion but very little experience, fortunately, we had two years of business school to work out the kinks.

We started with a very simple goal: finish a game. We didn’t need it to look good, play well, be particularly unique, or even fun, we just needed to prove that we could do it. With Michael (Founder, President, Creative Director) doing the level design and animation, his friend Chris producing a score, and a single programming contractor, RifRafRun was born. An Infinite Platformer with a sense of humor, RifRafRun was evidence enough that this was a business worth sticking with.

Fortunately, this minor victory caught the attention of Michael’s classmate Brent (formerly of Activision and Gameloft) who suggested a partnership may be in order. Brent provided the industry experience and knowledge, as well as the connections that had been missing, and allowed RifRaf Games to take on a much more ambitious project.

The Captain’s Chair creates a template for what kind of games we will build, and the company we will be, in the future. We want to focus on games where the story comes first and where player choice truly affects the experience. We want what happens in one game in our universe to affect what happens in all the rest of the games of our universe. Every game we release will build on and connect to all the others, regardless of game genre.
